Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan - Review

Demons Lexicon
Synopsis Via Goodreads:

Nick and his brother, Alan, have spent their lives on the run from magic. Their father was murdered, and their mother was driven mad by magicians and the demons who give them power. The magicians are hunting the Ryves family for a charm that Nick's mother stole -- a charm that keeps her alive -- and they want it badly enough to kill again.
Danger draws even closer when a brother and sister come to the Ryves family for help. The boy wears a demon's mark, a sign of death that almost nothing can erase...and when Alan also gets marked by a demon, Nick is des-perate to save him. The only way to do that is to kill one of the magicians they have been hiding from for so long.

Ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse, Nick starts to suspect that his brother is telling him lie after lie about their past. As the magicians' Circle closes in on their family, Nick uncovers the secret that could destroy them all.

I have to say, I did not enjoy Demon's Lexicon, and nearly did not finish it. With 100 pages left, I almost left it dry, however I did not, I stuck with it, trying to “will” myself to enjoy it. One of my favorite book bloggers – Carla of The Crooked Shelf, really enjoyed Demon's Lexicon (you can read her review here), and after a review like that – I thought, there had to be something wrong with me to not enjoy it much.

Though, it really had little to nothing to do with the story line, that made it an un-enjoyable book to me, it was more the style with which it was written. Demon's Lexicon was written in a 3rd person point of view – as such the main POV was always changing, which felt weird for me, confusing. I had a hard time following, who was talking and who was feeling what. I never really felt for the characters, or understood them, the way I wanted to.

The story, itself, like I said was a good one, it's about 2 brothers whom, have been running from wizards ever since they can really remember, though neither of them are entirely sure why. However, once one of the brothers gets marked by a demon, and then receives another mark to help protect a friend...it's up to the brothers (as well as there 2 friends) to search out the wizards they have been running from there whole life.

For me Demon's Lexicon was a 2 stars, I hear that the 2nd book in the series, The Demon's Covenant, will be from Mae's point of view, I look forward to reading that one.

  2. I was reading this online with Pulse It's program, and ended up just giving it up (after it froze for the umpteenth time). After 150ish pages, I still wasn't invested enough to keep fighting with the online book.

    Thanks for the honest review!
