The Dark Divine by Bree Despain - Review

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain Review
Have you ever read a book and when you were done, you were almost sad it was over? Like you somehow wish you could crawl back into the book, into the story and experience it all again?

That's how I feel about The Dark Divine – in a word – I LOVED IT...(or maybe in 3 words).

It was everything I hoped it would be and MORE, I tried to stay away from some of the reviews – only reading bits and pieces, so I could try to keep the mystery alive...I did not want to know what secrets it held, the description is so mysterious...(as you can see via the goodreads synopsis):

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother
Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood--but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint
in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul.

As such, I feel really strongly that the secrets within the pages of this novel need to be reveled in there own time, I am not going to further describe it...I want you to be as surprised as I was, I want you to marvel over the way the story unfolds, just the way Bree Despain wants you to...so, please – go pick up the book, you will NOT be disappointed!

I did want to tell you, that Bree has such an amazing story telling ability, that I am actually sad now to be done with the book, I nearly want to turn back chapters and reread it...to be huddled with Grace again hugging Daniell within the branches of the tree (ahh the tree).

With in the pages of The Dark Divine you will find a beautifully haunting tale, a romance with intense twists and turns, that leave you wanting more and never leave you wishing for less. It's a book that grabbed me by the heart strings and would NOT let go, until the last words of the last chapter were finished, I read it in about 30 hours...I had to sleep, and that, was one of the ONLY reason's I put it down – that and wanting the story to last, and last!

Bree has created characters that make you feel like you could pull up a chair and have lunch with them, Grace is so headstrong, determined as well as beautiful! (She can also be quite frustrating at
times...let me just tell you!) Daniel, well what can you say about Daniel – he's brilliant; strong, unique, carrying, and loving!

As I said before, Bree Despain has a way with a story...this tale is really beautiful in every
way...it's got a little something in it for everyone too – romance, mystery, and even a bit of paranormal. I am anxiously awaiting anything else that comes from Bree – and from what I hear she's writing another (I think The Dark Divine is going to be a series), so I hope Bree can write fast – because I for one, will be watching and waiting...and not patiently so!

I rate The Dark Divine a 5++

  3. I felt the EXACT same way about this book. I read this book in one day (which I don't usually do) because I couldn't put it down. And when I noticed that there was only about 50 pages left I kept sighing and tried to read slower only to get entralled and read it faster... haha... Oh well.

I think I saw Bree tweet about being done with the 1st draft of the sequel, but I could be completely wrong about that. I know that she is hard at work on it, which is good because I feel like I need it NOW.

I am so glad that you liked it as much as I did!!

  4. Erin, I was in a chat last night with her via Late Bloomers (Which was awesome) and she made note that she pushed back the Feb. 1st due date of her first draft, or she asked to push it back a bit - but she also said that the 2nd should be out for Christmas this year - Dec. 2010 WOOT!!

  8. The books sounds great. I love that feeling of getting lost in a book and not wanting it to end. I haven't had that feeling with too many books since I was a child, so it's always nice to find a book that can recapture that magical feeling now.

    Thanks for the review.
