I just finished The Pace, and I honestly have to say it's one of the best books I have ever read! I was awake last night till 2 in the morning just thinking about it. So I am curious, how did you come up with the unique idea's that are with in its pages?
Well, there was a small period of time when I was going through reading withdrawal, where I was looking for a love story to root for. When I couldn’t find it, I decided I’d write what I was looking for. In my head I kept seeing a guy who was worried because he didn’t know how to change the future to save a girl. Then, I’m the type who likes to think outside the box, so I started thinking of a way to make Weston a one-of-a-kind “special” guy, but in a “real-could-maybe-happen” way. And then the story details followed!
How many books do you envision, for The Pace Series?
That is a very tough question, because it will literally depend on where the story goes. But I will say that book four ideas made their way into my brain last week and I was really feeling what was happening, so probably four maybe more.
I hear you did not mean for the end of The Pace to be such a cliff hanger but more of a peaceful ending, what do you think now that you have read some of the reviews and everyone seems to be calling it a cliff hanger?
Oh man! I was surprised when I heard it makes some people want to throw the book across the room! But, honestly I really didn’t try to be mean or purposely leave it hanging. I just didn’t want a clichéd fight or rescue scene there. Instead, for Sophie I was going for more of a, “trust that things would be okay even when you may not think so” ending. Sort of going out on faith. But looking back I can understand why people feel that way. I did try to make the ending of book two softer, but it was HARD because of where the story goes. So people may still call me a cliffhanger queen, but it is better! Really!!
I can honestly say, right now, I have not written the review for The Pace (I have now, you can read it here)– not because I do not want to, but because I feel like I can't for some reason – if I started right now, I think it would be all gush..I have, been to your website and read all the information, including the awesome play list you have for the 2nd in the series, The Broken Lake, is there anything you can tell us, without giving away too much? Maybe a favorite line or two?
Well, I do like it the best so far. With The Pace, I had to develop their love for each other and reveal the secrets. The Broken Lake, is all about making what we already love about them work even when it seems impossible. As far as a hint, I can tell you Wes will be in some hot water!
Is all the “work” done for The Broken Lake, or are you still working on revisions and such? And if your not working on The Broken Lake can you tell us a bit about what you are working on?
It is done, but going through copy/edits. Right now I’m thinking through book three. It’s just about complete in my head and then I’ll be ready to type it out.
I’ve also started a different paranormal novel, but the next one in The Pace Series really needs to be done before I can fully commit to my other “guy.” He’s already giving Wes a run for his money though!
Do the characters from your books often reflect people you know, or people you have met in your life?
Sort of, but not by their actions. I kind of take personality traits from people I know, and then build a character around it. Once I place a personality in the story, they take over as someone brand new. But their actions and decisions revolve around that main trait that created them. So the characters always seem real to me and their reactions to situations stay authentic.
Ok, going to stop talking about the books now – if I keep it up, I will say something that I don't want to and ask for spoilers which I don't want! So let me ask you a couple of questions about you...
Why did you decide to delve into young adult fiction? Did you always want to be a writer?
I have always taught high school students. My favorite grade level is 11th. I just love that age and everything I do revolves around trying to teach 17-year-olds something new while not making their lives miserable for 90 minutes! LOL! So I wouldn’t have ever ventured into writing a story without keeping them in mind.
What is your favorite thing to do when your not writing?
Reading- oh, and bowling on the Wii with my kids. My daughter bowled a 265 the other night and she now has a fancy ball and “pro” by her name. I don’t- not even close!
Who is your favorite author currently, does it change or have you loved them for a long time?
Nicholas Sparks is making a comeback! I’ve always loved his work, but I hate to cry when I read and he does it to me every time, so I backed off a bit. But I recently read The Last Song and Dear John and they just reminded me of what an awesome love story writer he is. And I only cried a tiny bit which means they aren’t that sad!
Do you have any upcoming signings or tours coming up?
Not any new ones scheduled yet, but I think some more this spring!
Anything else you would like to add?
Just about a zillion thank yous This is my first book, and I reached pretty far on a lot of ideas to make the story original, so I’m just thankful that people like the concept and want to continue Sophie and Wes’ journey! I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much Shelena for being with us, I can tell you that I am REALLY looking forward to The Broken Lake, and your new project - not sure how anyone can give Wes a run for his money - but I will be waiting to read it! Also, with you living so close to me, I am really looking forward to any upcoming events, I hope to be able to attend at least one! :) I would love to meet you!
