Goodreads synopses:
PEOPLE OF THE SWORD combines myth, history, and conquest with music, sorcery and a touch of romance to impart the struggles of two vastly different cultures suddenly dependent on one another for survival. Confronted by a common enemy, the wizard Crarnock, the druids and knights of Tropal realize that only through cooperation can they defeat Crarnock's goblin army. The journey will test the resolve of both peoples as they realize that their collective bias and misunderstandings are as much a threat as Crarnock himself. For readers interested in history, mythology, culture change, and classic struggles between Good and Evil, PEOPLE OF THE SWORD is for you.I have to preface this review by saying reading about history is NOT my thing, at all – it never has been. However when Neil contacted me though twitter and offered to send me not one but two signed copies of People of The Sword, I wanted very much to give it a go again.
Neil is such a sweet person, I very much looked forward to reading this book. As the book started I got really nervous though, it's got tons of characters with a bit of a 3rd person point of view, which I also have a bit of a hard time with. However, though Neil's writing style, I was captivated. He crafted a story that I was enthralled with, and enjoyed very much.
There is a lot of history here, as well as myth – and I was happy that it was Neil's book that I tried and not maybe another author, the way he crafted People Of The Sword, I almost forgot about the history part. I mean, I got caught up with the characters so much that it did not bother me at all. (Though, silly as it sounds I took notes on the characters - like I said there's LOTS of characters.)
It's obvious, for me, that Neil took his time and really researched this book, the attention to detail is amazing. Making the scene's flow effortlessly, as well as the characters eventually.
I also really enjoyed the mystical element with in the book, as well as the touch of romance, it was just enough to keep me going, and did not distract from the amazing action that this book holds with in it's pages.
Bottom line – Neil is an author I will be looking out for again in the future – it's obvious that he knows what he's doing...though if he had not sent me his novel I am not sure it's one I would have picked up. I really dislike the cover. I give People of the Sword a 4 mushrooms.
This book was provided – as was the contest book by Neil O'Donnell
