A couple weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be contacted by Mr. Vega about his novel Arson…having no idea what to expect, I looked it up on goodreads and found the synopsis very interesting, it defiantly sounded like a book I might enjoy, as such I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to read it early.
Now that I am done, this is defiantly one of those books that I feel like it would be impossible to write my own synopsis about, one of those books I even have a hard time writing a review for period. It’s not that I did not like it, I did…here's the synopsis via goodreads -
LIKE A FREAK. HE CAN CREATE FIRE. HE NEVER ASKED FOR IT. HE NEVER WANTED IT. BUT HE CAN'T SHUT IT OFF.Now let's see if I can get my thoughts together enough to give you my opinion about this one…Arson simply is raw, gritty, and at times even hard to read, because it is such a dark novel. However there's beauty to be found here, the breath taking love story between Arson and Emerson, the amazing way that Vega draws us into the world of each of these characters by his use of words.
Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl-who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin-moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. Using what he fears the most about himself, Arson must face his consuming past and confront the nightmare that is present as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Dark, moody, and breathtakingly relevant, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated boy with unimaginable ability, is sure to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation.
At times, I did feel that the writing was a bit disjointed, however I also felt that that added to the beauty that is Arson, and the ending left me gripping my book, screaming NOOOOO…the ending's quite a cliffhanger, and it's left me begging for the next novel to be released so we can find out what happened between these characters.
I advise you when reading Arson, have an open mind, Vega has an amazing amount of talent to create such a world, I found myself rooting for each of the characters, even Arson's tortured grandmother as well as Emerson’s parents, I felt connected to each of them in a very different way.
I really enjoyed that Vega switched points of view, and I really enjoyed how he did it, making sure he never left his readers wondering whose "brain" we were in…It allowed us to see the story from each characters point of view, giving us the full picture.
I feel as though this review is somewhat disjointed, my feelings are somewhat disjointed, I am sorry for that, but honestly I can't help it…
Bottom Line - I want to say finally that I defiantly did enjoyed Arson, and I am VERY much looking forward to reading the sequel. Though this book is not for everyone, it’s dark and as I said earlier hard to read at times, it's also beautiful in its own right and in my opinion, it's very much worth the read…if you're up to it! Estevan Vega is an extremely gifted writer, and I can't wait to read more! I give it a 3, or maybe a 4 mushrooms.
