Firespell (Dark Elite, #1) by Chloe Neill - Review

Synopsis via goodreads:
As the new girl at the elite St. Sophia’s boarding school, Lily Parker thinks her classmates are the most monstrous things she’ll have to face…

When Lily’s guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, she was shocked. So was St. Sophia’s. Lily’s ultra-rich brat pack classmates think Lily should be the punchline to every joke, and on top of that, she’s hearing strange noises and seeing bizarre things in the shadows of the creepy building.

The only thing keeping her sane is her roommate, Scout, but even Scout’s a little weird—she keeps disappearing late at night and won’t tell Lily where she’s been. But when a prank leaves Lily trapped in the catacombs beneath the school, Lily finds Scout running from a real monster.

Scout’s a member of a splinter group of rebel teens with unique magical talents, who’ve sworn to protect the city against demons, vampires, and Reapers, magic users who’ve been corrupted by their power. And when Lily finds herself in the line of a firespell, Scout tells her the truth about her secret life, even though Lily has no powers of her own—at least none that she’s discovered yet…
Firespell is the first book Chloe Neill’s Dark Elite Series, and what an amazing first book it was. I really enjoyed Firespell!

Firespell is about Lily, a seemingly normal 16 year old girl, whom thinks her world is perfect…that is until one day when her parents receive a grant, to work in Germany, for 2 years…then everything in Lily’s life turns upside down.

First, her parents decide that she can’t go with them to Germany. Then, they decide that St. Sophia’s in Chicago, thousands of miles from her home, in a place she’s never been before, is the place she should spend the 2 years while they are away.

While there, she encounters several things that seem really weird to her…First, St. Sophia’s itself, it’s an old convent converted into a boarding school for girls. It’s a creepy place, with hidden passages, and hollowed halls. Secondly, her suite mate, Scout is a bit weird…often disappearing in the middle of the night, while at the same time declaring herself Lily’s new BFF. In addition to all of that, there’s a group of girls – who have taken it upon themselves to make Lily the bud of all there jokes…and end up leaving Lily trapped in a room, alone.

It’s when Lily breaks out of that room, when the story really takes on a life of its own, secrets start being reveled…and we find out that Scout is part of a splinter cell, called The Dark Elite – a magician with powerful magic whose sworn to protect the city…but from whom, and why? To find out those secrets you must read, Firespell.

Firespell is, well wow…it’s an amazing start to the Dark Elite series – Firespell really sets the stage for what I can only expect to be an amazing series. It’s riveting and very exciting – with tons of action, lots of amazing twists and fun original characters!

Speaking of the characters honestly, I think they were my favorite part of Firespell! Honestly, though the story is told via Lily’s point of view, each of the characters adds to the story, being extremely unique, as well as likable. Scout with her quirkiness, Jason with his quick quips and sweet personality. Then of course Lily, I loved what a strong, unique, yet normal girl she is. And I just loved the relationship between her and Jason, I really hope to see more!

Chloe Neill has become a new favorite author of mine, I think that when you have a premise like the one Ms. Neill has created, I can only assume they will be as good if not better than Firespell. I am also really looking forward to reading her other series called the Chicagoland Vampires! Ms. Neill has such a unique voice, and she creates amazingly likable and REAL characters!

Bottom Line – Firespell is a book worth picking up…it’s action packed, unique, with rich original characters. Ms. Neill, better be ready for a fun ride in the young adult genre – this author is really going places, and I am excited to see what comes next, in Hexbound (Dark Elite book 2), due out in January 2011! I give Firespell a 4 mushrooms!
