Synopsis via goodreads:
Penny is sick of boys and sick of dating. So she vows: no more. It's a personal choice. . .and, of course, soon everyone wants to know about it. And a few other girls are inspired. A movement is born: The Lonely Hearts Club (named after the band from Sgt. Pepper). Penny is suddenly known for her nondating ways . . . which is too bad, because there's this certain boy she can't help but like. . . .
This synopsis really does not tell you the whole story...The Lonely Hearts Club is such a cute, feel good kinda book! A book that I REALLY want my 10 year old daughter to read...it's about coming of age, learning that boys are not always all they are cracked up to be, and that even if you do decide to date, a boy should NEVER EVER replace a friend or come before a friend, or for that matter come before you!
Elizabeth Eulberg did such an amazing job capturing this age group, and Penny being in love with the Beatles is just to perfect! I loved her quirkiness, and her strength. She's such a unique dynamic character that I was happy to see had many facets to her personality!
One thing I found is, there's LOTS of characters in this book - with a cast of around 20+ people in the club, it's tough to keep them all straight, and at times I had a problem, but honestly I think that Elizabeth did a really amazing job keeping everyone seperate, I mean to make sure the right character was headed to the right class, amazing!
Though, it was fun reading about the guys with in the pages of the book...It was totally nice to see some of the traits that guys of that age often have...that not every guy is just out for love...there are some pigs out there, we all know that – and Elizabeth Eulberg was not afraid to show that side! It was refreshing!
With her debut novel Elizabeth Eulberg has given herself a high standard which to live up to...I really loved the cutsiness of The Lonely Hearts Club, not to mention the heart felt story with in it's pages. It was a laugh out loud kind of book with a sweet message for young girls everywhere!
I give The Lonely Hearts Club a 4 mushrooms, and I will be keeping my eye on Elizabeth Eulberg for future releases!
