Synopsis via goodreads:
Haunted by chilling memories of demonic possession and murder, Moira O’Donnell has spent seven years hunting down her mother, Fiona, whose command of black magic has granted her unprecedented control of the underworld. Now Moira’s global search has led her to a small California town that’s about to become hell on earth.
Tormented by his own terrifying past and driven by powers he can’t explain, ex-seminarian Rafe Cooper joins Moira’s dangerous quest. But Fiona is one devilish step ahead. Hungry for greater power, eternal youth, and stunning beauty, the sorceress is unleashing upon the mortal world the living incarnations of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Together with a demonologist, a tough female sheriff, and a pair of star-crossed teenagers, Moira and Rafe are humanity’s last chance to snatch salvation from the howling jaws of damnation.
WOW, what can I say about Original Sin...it was well, WOW! It's been a long time since I read a book with as much action and adventure as Original Sin holds with in it's pages!
First off, I am so glad that I finished this book – it took me a L-O-N-G while to get into the story, with so much plot – I was kinda lost in the story in the beginning, it took me a good 100 pages to really get into it enough for the story to start taking shape and making sense.
One of the reason's I think it was so hard to get into Original Sin was because when we enter the story, Moira is already hiding from her mom (Fiona), as well as her sister (Serena) and so much has already happened...Moira is a witch, whom has decided to renounce her “title” and leave the coven. Unlike many books in this genre Brennan has added her interesting twist, there is no such thing as a “good” witch. Also, it appears that Moira has done something, though we are unclear of what, that ended in the death of the man she loved.
However, as the story starts to unfold, the plot starts to take shape, suddenly the story takes on a life of it's own...allowing the characters to pop off the page. The action is non stop, my heart raced, my knuckles turned white, I was locked in suspense, carried by the mystery of it all.
Like I said, several of the characters popped off the page for me; Moria, full of strength, determination as well as rage and anger – she internally struggles with herself, to do what's right, to rise above the darkness that is her past; Rafe, carries with him such vulnerability, such mystery, I struggled to understand his role, he seems to be so much more, and I am excited to see where the story takes him; Anthony is a demonologist. Whom basically despises everything that Moria is, “once a witch always a witch” he often says. However, he's a strong character that's got a lot of life as well as strength. Sky is Antony's “only human” girl friend, and while she's “only human” she's full of spunk and know how!
The characters are so rich in Original Sin, learning there back story was quite fun, and I am excited to see where the story takes them, especially Rafe, whom we did not learn to much about! I am also excited about Rafe and Moria's impending relationship, if that's what it turns into!
The one thing I will say, other than the fact it took me a while to get into Original Sin, is that it's got LOTS of characters – though most of them are in the background, it was sometimes tough trying to remember where we last saw someone. That being said, I think this story was one that could not have been written with out all those characters, because of the richness of the plot! So, while it might have been sometimes tough to place someone, it was a needed element with in the confines of the story. Also, I think that Ms. Brennan did a great job of casually reminding us of who the person was...which did not take me “outside” of the story, or annoy me as it sometimes does.
One other thing I wanted to touch on, Original Sin is “billed” as a paranormal romance – though there is one love scene, romance is not the main topic of this one – it's really more of a build up of plot, introducing us to Moria's world...I am though, very excited to see what Rafe meant in the closing lines of Original Sin! That being said, I did not miss the romance, not at all! I do like a good love story to go with my books, but really I did not miss it here.
Last thoughts - Ms. Brennan created quite a stir in me, with Original Sin – rich back story, amazingly strong characters, tons of twists and turns and LOTS of action! I am excited to read the next installment of The Seven Deadly Sins titled, Carnal Sin which is being released June 2010! As well as keep Allison Brennan on my radar, and check out some of her other works! I give Original Sin a 4 mushrooms, if you like fast passed, action, with a paranormal twist – you will LOVE it! I can't wait for Carnal Sin - book 2 in the Seven Deadly Sins!
