Wings by Aprilynne Pike - Review

Synopsis via goodreads -
Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.
Let me be completely honest with you; I dislike books about Fairies, I really do – there's only been 2 I can honestly tell you I enjoyed and there both by the same author - Lament and Ballad...the others I have picked up have left me seriously wondering why I bothered. With that being said though, after seeing all the rave reviews for Wings, and with the upcoming book Spells coming out, I really wanted to give Aprilynne a chance to impress me!

Boy am I ever glad I took the chance, she not only impressed me, she had me giggling, while throwing up my hands shouting "finally another story about fairies I can wrap my head around!" Aprilynne crafted such a unique story, Wings left me craving more...I can't wait to see what Spells has in store for us.

One of the main things I enjoyed about Wings was the intense love triangle the likes of which I don't know that I have ever read before. Of course we all know the love triangle in the Twilight series, and maybe that's one reason that everyone seems to compare Wings to Twilight – but, for me anyway there was never a choice for whom Bella would choose, it was always Edward. But in Wings? The choose, it's not nearly as clear cut to me and it's driving me NUTS!!!

On one hand, clearly David is the one to choose – but on the other...how can Laurel not choose Tamani? Both having traits that the other lacks, each filling a place with in Laurel's heart that was at one time empty. Though I am terribly impressed by how Laurel, a girl who's only 15, deals! Making sure that her head is always in control, not allowing herself to be dragged around by only her heart. She's one tough cookie, in soo many ways!

Honestly...I hope Laurel can figure it all out, because I sure can't – I know who my favorite is, though I can't tell especially because I did not make up my mind fully until the last few pages!

There are other things too, which I don't want to talk to much about because with such a unique twist to this fairy tale, I don't want to ruin it for anyone...I can only offer this – as a person whose not "into" fairies, or the folklore which surrounds them, this one caught my attention, and had me turning pages like a mad woman to see what would happen next.

I enjoyed each of the characters, though it struck me as odd knowing what kind of fairy Laurel is why she did not try to help her father, and why, though she's close to them she turns to David first – but then I guess if I were under that kind of pressure, I can't say I would be thinking straight either.

Bottom Line – A unique story, full of interesting twists and "hold your breath" turns. Wings offers readers a solid foundation to which I can only imagine will be a wonderful series! I can't wait to pick up Spells to see where Laurel's life takes her next, and I can only hope my "guy" wins her heart (gosh I hope she figures this all out soon, I don't know if I can take it!) I give Wings a solid 4 mushrooms, and have HIGH hopes for Spells due out May 4th, 2010.

  1. I said the exact same thing. I loved how Aprilynne did that with the love triangle. I love being just as confused as Laurel must be. That's why I never understand people who are team Jacob. It's not like we ever expected Bella to actually pick him. I'm wondering who your "guy" is. I was so for David in the beginning but I think as the story ended I shifted. But who knows what Spells will bring.

  9. Loved your review. I totally don't know who I'm rooting for either. I love Tamani because you can tell how much he loves her and always has as we find out but at the same time the way David makes her feel about her "wings" and how he helps her. Oh man who to root for?!?!? I can't wait to read Spells!!

  19. I loved the events in discovering who Laurel was. Especially the underwater 'survival' one! ^^ I got the vibe Laurel is more attracted to Tamani and only likes David as a friend (which sucks cos I like David better :{) BTW, nice mushrooms rating system :D
