I was very happy to find out...Impossible leaves nothing "bad" on the table at all...Impossible is a beautifully written, highly original story, about Lucy, a young 17 year old girl, who after having been abandoned by her own mother, and knowing nothing about her father, is a well adjusted and living with her step mom and dad...only occasionally seeing her "crazy" mother.
Lucy does the things most teens do, school, track team, prom, however she has no interest in boys except for Zach, a guy she's known since she was little and even though he's older, he's always been her best friend. He knows all about Lucy's "crazy" mom Miranda, whom only pops up occasionally and only seems to ruin things when she does.
Soon, Lucy's life starts to come undone, first she discovers she is pregnant (due to a rape), then she finds her mothers journal as well as a few letters that Miranda has left for Lucy – all written before Lucy was even born. The letters, talking about a curse, talking about a song that Lucy grew up knowing, a song taught to her step dad who learned it via Miranda, seemingly the only gift Miranda left for Lucy before she went crazy.
Soon it becomes apparent that the song, the curse; it's all linked – 3 seemingly impossible tasks, all to be completed before Lucy's daughter is born – else Lucy herself suffer the same fate of her mother and all the mothers before her.
Can Lucy, whom has the help of her family and good friends like Zach over come the curse, save herself as well as her unborn daughter? After all, no woman has before had the help she has – no other woman in her family has ever had a families loving support behind them. The only way to find out is to read the book...
Impossible is a haunting love story with carefully crafted characters whom lept off the page. It's a unique story, carrying with it just enough fantasy to make it interesting but with enough realism to make you feel like tomorrow you could wake up with the Elvin Knight hovering over your shoulder.
I really loved the speed of Impossible...it all flows very nicely. The only part that seemed a bit rushed was the end, it all seemed to "conclude" very abruptly...it left me kinda wanting more...
Bottom Line - I really enjoyed Impossible, though the ending was a bit rushed, it worked...So I give Impossible a 4 mushrooms and am super excited to read Extraordinary, which is coming out in September!

I haven't heard of this one before, but it sounds really good from your review!
ReplyDeleteAwesome review, as always. I loved this book as well. I didn't know Werlin had another book coming out, Extraordinary. It's a stand-alone and not a sequel to Impossible, right? I couldn't find anything about it, so I'm hoping you might know :D
ReplyDeleteMaria - yes I beleive it's a stand alone, not associated with Impossible. (No matter how much I might wish there was more to the Impossible story, it ended quite fast...)
ReplyDeleteI have this book in my classroom library, HS, and the girls love it. I have not had a chance to read..it is on my summer reading list
ReplyDeleteYou know, I can't think of anything. I'm sure I've read some in the past, but I can't recall any. All that came to mind was Tithe/Ironside by Holly Black since the MC's mother is in a band. Sounds like I need to go find some musical books. ; )

Not sure how musical you were thinking. Morganville Vampires (Michael is a musician)
The Mortal Instruments (Simon is in a band)
Lament/Ballad (Deidre, Luke, and James are all musicians)
Sounds really good. Thanks for sharing. I dont know if I have read anything yet that had a musical theme. A few books that musicians in them but not in the overall theme.

Great review. Musical theme...hmm...well I did read the High School Musical novelization to some kids while babysitting. I don't think it was paranormal but the experience was pretty scary. Thanks for hosting!

Hmmmm. Toughie. I'd have to say Beautiful Creatures...There was one small musical aspect to it. I remember Lena being able to play an instrument...but I don't remember what. I'm horrible!

Thanks for the chance to win this book. I really want to read it. I cant think of any books with a musical theme but I think the Kitty series (Kitty and the Midnight Hour is the first book) had a playlist for each chapter at the beginning of the book. Oh and 2 of the Dark series(Dark Symphony and Dark Challenge) by Christine Feehan had a lot of music in them.

Musical theme, I haven't been reading very long, but the only on I can think of is a contemporary called Rock me. The Hero was a rock star.
Please enter me in this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThe only musical-themed book I can think of is The Phantom of the Opera.
