Seers of Light by Jennifer DeLucy - Review

Bloody Brilliant! That's what I thought of Seers of Light...and to think I might have missed this book, for one reason or another – but as Abram might say, "you find what you are meant to find." I am so thankful that Jennifer DeLucy found me, via goodreads – and that I took a chance with her book! It changed a part of me, and I am not sure I could ever change back, nor would I want to...it's rare you find a "fit" within a world such as this one...a world you wish you could crawl into, and even if you could only live in a small hole and observe the characters as well as the setting...you would be content!

That's how I feel about Seers of Light... (Beware this review is a bit winded...but I could NOT help it!)

But first the synopsis via goodreads:
Lillian Hunt has never truly lived. Always sensing more to the world than is easily perceived, she fears that her instincts are stubborn flights of fancy, or worse, mental instability. But some things—disappearing strangers, tangible dreams, and visits from malevolent creatures—cannot be ignored. Before it's too late, Lillian is ripped from the only existence she’s ever known and thrust into a reality that she always suspected, but could scarcely believe. She must learn the truth about who she is, the powerful beings that wish to destroy her, and the two men who would die to protect her.

Jennifer DeLucy has created a unique, enchanting tale of destiny and the ageless power of love in her debut novel, Seers of Light. DeLucy's novel charms readers with quirky characters, while sketching a haunting portrait of one woman's journey on the path of the supernaturally gifted. But be prepared. Once you've entered the world of Seers, you will never be the same.
So many things about Seers of Light held my attention, from the way it's told...to the beauty it holds. Seers of Light is unlike any book I have ever read before, it's basically dialogue driven, while told in 1st person point of view, via Lily. Which was unique to me, I had never picked up a book so driven by character dialogue before.

At first it struck me as a bit odd, I wondered if I might miss something, or if a book could have "to much talking," I mean honestly doesn't dialogue sometimes just bog a book down or distract you? (If, I am being honest, it does to me, at least occasionally.) But then, something happened, and the words flowed into me, trickling in like a stream. I found myself surprised and even amazed that the conversations held my attention, the interaction between the characters were, what I can only express as, AMAZING. I could really feel each and every interaction building into friendships as well as love and family.

In a lot of books, I see 2 people, fall in love (I gotta have a good romance in my books, don't you) – and for whatever reason, it seems real to me, though some say "they fell in love to quickly" etc. I don't feel that way to often, I believe in love at first sight, and so I go with it. (I still will, I am sure.) But Seers of Light is different in the way the characters interact, since it's dialogue driven, you SEE this interaction, you SEE the reason's for love to be ever evolving...and you see how, though the characters are so very different, how they meld into becoming a loving, tight knit family.

Seers of Light, is engaging, real, authentic and the character dilogue made me love it all the more. I am not sure that this story could have been told in any other way! DeLucy is a master at character interactions and dialogue!

As you might be able to tell, I was drawn into the world Jennifer DeLucy created, I aligned myself with the characters, cried with them, laughed with them (and occasionally at them), and screamed though my teeth for things to be different. Each character extremely multidimensional, something you don't often see, especially in a novel with easily 20+ characters!

Though the cast only has, a few, what I might call "main characters," those supporting the book were just as important. You could tell that Jennifer really took the time to think out each and every personality portrayed within Seers of Light, because each was just as wonderful in there unique, distinctive, qualities as the last, which allowed me to never "forget a face," so to speak.

And since I can't mention 20+ characters, I will mention MY favorites.

William – snarky is the way I would describe him. He's got such a strong soul, he's passionate, loving and beyond all he's kind, as well as ultimately forgiving! Though he thinks of himself as a monster though out the book, his soul sings. He's a beautiful song, just waiting for the perfect singer – he's mastered so much, as well as lost more than any one person should, yet he forgives with out question, loves with out boundaries, and in the end became more powerful because, ultimately he let his soul sing!

Lily, in a word; Kick-Ass (OK maybe 2)...she's got a real head on her shoulders, she knows what she wants and while sometimes she gravitates toward "easy" she always makes the right decisions for her! She loves all, passionately with out reservations. She has the ability to listen – really listen to people...and her courage is beyond reproach! She grows into herself though out the book, like a flower – she's just beginning to see the world as the book opens, but as it comes to a close, she's big, bright and bold!

And, last but not least Christian – my word for him would be co-dependent (at least at first)...though the guy grows on you, and as the reality that is Christian starts to unfold you can only wish to wrap your arms around him for a giant hug! He reminds me of a giant teddy bear, that's been dropped in the mud. At first, you don't want to deal with it...but as a cute teddy bear you loved as a child, you just can't forget it, so you work, intent to discover again what's underneath, and when you do it's amazing qualities start to shine though, reminding you that sometimes working hard to discover beauty is not only worth it but an amazing feeling!

Like I said Seers of Light is bloody brilliant! And so unlike anything I have ever read before...mixing, an intense romance, a love triangle, with a world that is so rich, colorful and beautiful with dramatic turns and cliff hanging twists (oh and it's FUNNY too) – it had me dangling over the edge (in a purely good way I assure you) – I think that only an author as skilled as DeLucy could pull it off. Lily's world is rot with danger, filled with devastation, and yet the amount of trust and love the characters portray is beyond anything I myself could put into words! (Though as you can clearly see, I have tried!)

In addition to all of this, Seers of Light also terrified me, it's not been since The Stand I can honestly say a book creeped me out! Seers of Light, did! This book had me reeling, it's scary, a physiological kinda scary (the best kind in my opinion), I was biting my nails and jumping when the thunder hit (lucky me to be reading it during a thunder storm right?).

Bottom Line – I was not sure, really, what Seers of Light would hold for me, but I can honestly sit here at 2 AM, writing this review. (Because while trying to sleep, Lily would not LET me! Thoughts of Seers of Light just kept flooding in, demanding a voice!) Seers of Light is another book, I could not put down, a book I did not want to put down. I actually emailed Jennifer around chapter 14 already asking about a sequel, because I just could not think about never reading about Lily and William again...not to mention Christian and Abram! (Though, I am 100% positive this will be a book I read again, I already have once!) I was sure I would want to know more and I do...now that I am done, though thankfully Jennifer ended this one in an elegant way, the epilogue was just heartbreaking...as were the last chapters. I can only hope to be content until book 2 comes out!

Beautifully authentic, true to the heart, a book like no other – with a soft voice and a strong story – Seers of Light is amazing in each and every way that counts!

Note: Seers of Light is a novel with one "adult scene" – it has one, very nice sexual encounter, in the last half of the book. The characters are also 25+ years of age. However, with that being said I think this book would be wonderful for an older teen, the characters do "have sex" but not until love is very well established, and they are careful about it.

  7. Okay! Reading this review had me squeeing over the book all over again and wanting to re-read it with a passion! I LOVED SEERS OF LIGHT! I loved it so much because it was the story was so unexpected! Jennifer was brilliant in the world she created; the vampire mythology alone was pure genius! So different and intriguing!

I can't even express how much I adore William! *le sigh* My heart pounded loudly with ever word he said!

And although Christian constant negative comments about William really annoyed me to no end, I did feel for the situation he was in. I hope he finds peace.

I have recommended this book to everyone I know, and I seriously can not wait for the next book in the series!

    Thanks for this review!

  16. Seer's of Light is literally excellent. I've read it three times. I wish it could get alot of hype DeLucy honestly could do better than Twilight. Its so much more real with interactions. I love dialogue driven books and really recommend this to everyone!

  17. Yes, this book deserves every single one of those 'shrooms! As you say, it has everything---defined and interesting characters, supernatural intrigue, a bit of mystery, and romance...ah, the romance. I love it when a book can be complete in and of itself, yet somehow leave me wanting more. These characters and the whole world Jennifer created is so vivid that it feels like it's actually going on out there somewhere. Thank goodness there's a sequel coming.

Thank you for writing this wonderful review, that describes the book so well without giving away any spoilers. How did you do that? Well done!

  18. I was so happy to see this!!! Seers of Light is without a doubt as amazing as the review states and more. As described above, Seers' dialogue pulls you right into the book until you literally feel like you are a wallflower, listening to their every word with rapt attention. And before you know it, you find yourself squealing with their triumphs, cowering from their enemies, and swooning from their romance right along side them!! This is absolutely, positively a book I will re-read over and over again, simply to go play in the world that Jennifer DeLucy created. (Brilliant, that girl!!!) And the sequel - squee!!! I cannot WAIT to visit the world of Seers all over again!!! (And don't even get me started on William . . . yum!)

For those who have not read it yet - bump Seers of Light up on your tbr list, stat!! You'll thank yourself for it!

NOW!!!' list or hit you because I desperately want to read it right this very second and don't have a copy!! I think I'm in love with the characters already. I'd heard of this book a few times but this is the first review I've actually read and you could say I am totally, 100% converted. I can't wait to read it! Excellent review :)
