Breaking the Binding?

So, I was thinking in the shower - yes I do that a lot - anyway, I am curious. Do you break the binding, while reading a paperback book?

I tend to prefer paperback, for whatever reason - and I do crack the binding - it's almost a tribute to the book...when the binding gets cracked it's like something inside of me screams - YES, your into the story, the characters are clicking, this is an awesome novel that SCREAMS to be read!

Last night, I would not LET myself fall asleep before getting to the point where I could crack the binding on The Light of Asteria: Kailmeyra's Last Hope, though even *blush* after it was broken for the first time...I still read more! It's an addicting book, I am LOVING it so far, more than I can actually tell you - the emotions it's stirring in me are like the winds in a tornado, I am drawn with desire to finish yet trying to hold back to savor the quiet moments I spend in the world - it's one of those you want to finish, CRAVE to finish, yet don't ever want to leave...I love those kinds of books - and this one did not even grab me from the beginning, it took a chapter or so until I was fully covered...and I do mean covered - The Light of Asteria feels like a blanket, soft, warm yet undeniably textured with it's many facets and arch's.

So anyway, getting off track again - do you, break the binding? I gotta know if I am bringing bad book mo-jo onto myself, or if there's other's out there like me!

  1. Oh, I have to break the binding in my books. Even though I love the books to be in otherwise perfect condition, a perfect binding to me, says that the book has been loved.

  2. OHHH soo true Jessi, that's it exactly - so well said...it's not loved, if it's not broken - I agree I want my books non dog eared, non maked up, but that binding thing...

  3. Yes, I break the binding--one of the first things I do with a PB

  4. When I was selling my used books online I tried not to break the binding because the sold for more.
Now that I don't do that I must break the binding! (unless it borrowed)
    I don't think it's bad joo-joo at all ;-)

  5. Yup! My books get shamelessly abused. It's a sign of love ;)

  6. I try not to break the binding - but I am going to rethink after hearing so many other thoughts on it!

  7. I really try not to, but it happens, especially if it is a huge book!

  8. Im with Beverly, I try not to just to keep them in perfect condition. But I see what you mean, and it makes sense (though it would be a very bad point with real relationships Lol brake it and it's loved hahahaha)

  11. I definitely try to keep the bindings as smooth as possible, because books just look so nice all new and pretty, hehe ... but the bindings usually get at least one crease in them, so I'm not sure how possible it is to NOT break the binding, for me at least :)

  12. I try not to break the binding. I think my childhood librarian ingrained it into me that I should handle my books with extreme care, so it's just second nature. LOL

  13. I am not one to break the binding & would freak out when friends would break them but after reading this I might have to try it. You may have just broke me from my habit.

  14. lol what can i say i do break the binding, im kinda careless overall so it comes naturally lol :D

  15. I don't purposely try to break it but it usually happens anyway lol. If it's borrowed then I do take more care though as I know it bugs some people.

Some books just look better broken and tatty, as long as it's done with love. I'm particularly thinking of my Hitchiker's books here which are almost falling apart but sci-fi books in general must be worn in IMO :D

  16. I'm the kind who will shriek with horror if I saw the binding of my beloved book breaks! So we are at the total opposite pole there. I take an extreme care on my books because they are extremely expensive at the place I come from. I'll try to keep them as smooth as new most of the time.

  17. I don't break it on purpose, but it doesn't bother me at all when it happens. In fact, it's kind of a relief, because then I don't feel like I have to be careful. :-)

  18. I always do, it's a habbit. For me it just makes things a little more comfortable to sit and read it. Maybe that's just me, lol.

  19. It depends on if I'm having issues keeping the damn book open! Usually smaller mass market paperbacks give me this trouble and I'll be breaking them in so I can see better. :) Otherwise, no, I don't make it a requirement for my paperbacks.

I just looked at my current read, Nightshade, it's a large book, I'm a little over 1/3 of the way done and the binding is in perfect condition. :)

  20. Ooh I hate breaking the binding!! I try very hard not to, though sometimes it's inevitable. I love my books looking new as possible.. I never looked at it from the other perspective!

  21. It's not something that I try to do or not to do. But I do love it when the books I adore look well worn and loved.

  22. I try not to break the binding. I like the book to stay in "as new" condition as long as possible.

  23. I'm with Lori. I think that was verbatim what I wanted to say! LOL

  24. Kaylan, I totally agree with you. The book is much more comfortable to hold if I break the binding. And the more comfortable it is, the more I don't want to put it down. I really hate struggling to keep a book open while I try to read it. I don't dog-ear the pages or mark them up but I think a broken binding shows that the book is loved and that is, after all, what a book wants isn't it?

Of course, if the book is borrowed, I respect the condition that the owner has chosen for it.

  25. A book with out a broken binding is a book which has yet to be fully experienced and appreciated!

  28. I try my best to not break the binding. I’m really neurotic about my books and how I treat them. I don’t eat with them, bathe with them, and I’d never dog ear a page. With that said the rest of my home is organized chaos ;) I have to control what I can LOL.

  29. i did in the beginning without even thinking about it. My older books are look like crap because of it. Now I try to be more conciencous about it. I feel like I'm breaking its back or something. hehe.

  30. I don't break the binding because I love to have my books in great condition, and looking neat. The only times bindings ever get broken in my house is when I read a book for about the third time - and then it can't be helped, it breaks on its own!

The binding on my favourite book is broken in about six places, since it's about 20 years old and has been read probably more than ten times.

  31. Haha Jenn, I'm at my most creativ in the shower too! That's when the greatest ideas come to me :-)

And no, I try NEVER to break the spine of my books! I also prefer paperbacks and always take great care not to break the spine, which is quite an achievement with Marian Keyes' 700 page-long books believe me, but I succeed! :-) I like my books to look pristine, shiny new, so I never break the binding if I can help!

  32. it's horrible, but I do.

  33. Eh, I try REALLY hard not to break bindings, lol. I open my books to about... a couple inches wide? I don't always succeed with paperbacks though... *tear*

    Fun topic, haha! :D

  34. I don't try to break the binding on purpose, but if it does it does! I love keeping my books in good condition so I try not to, though.

  35. I don't purposely try to break the binding on my books but when it does happen, I'm a little sad at first since I like them to look nice on my shelf, but usually forget about it and continue reading. :D I kind of read with my books open but not all the way, so I guess I break less bindings that way? I used to break the bindings all the time, I guess my reading ways have changed~ LOL, broken books do look more loved!

  36. I never crack the binding. I tend to be a little bit of a freak when it comes to my books and books in general. I like to keep them in great condition. When I read a paperback I usually don't open it up very wide lol.

  37. lol. I try to avoid that! I want my books to look brand new, and I'm getting really mad if someone else cracks the binding of my books! (hello sis, stop doing that, otherwise I'll never lend you another book!)

  38. I like to break the spine on books that need to be opened to read them lol, eg Night Huntress series.

My Vampire Academy books spines haven't been broken because they're the types of books that don't need the spines cracked to be able to read.
    (big, floppy)

so yeah, thats when i crack spines hehe
