The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - Mini-view

Synopsis via goodreads:
Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.
You guys know me, I don't "do" fairy...I am not a fan of the fey and usually I feel left, cold and alone while trying to delve into there crazy mixed up worlds.

There's only one real "fairy" book I have read that I can call myself a fan of, and that's the Wing's Series...but now, I am happy to report Julie Kagawa has given me another world of fairies to love, pine after and seek out!

I have never read A Midsummer Night's Dream, and so though I have been told this one is a retelling, you could not prove it by me, so I went into the world cold, and came out still chilled by the world that Julie Kagawa created. It's wonderful, dark and eerie, beautifully written with a masterful cast, it's got my mind reeling...that ending makes me 100% glad that I have The Iron Daughter as an egalley I can pick up TODAY – hence the mini-view so I can get to it sooner.

I loved the characters, though Meghan is a bit willing, she pretty much does what everyone tells her to do till the end, which drove me MAD! Then there's Puck and Ash – ok, um I feel kinda like – WHAT? I loved Puck's energy and his willingness no matter the time or place to stick himself out there to give Meghan a much needed laugh! Then there's Puck, dark, brooding and robust; he's got a past, we all know it, I only hope to glean more of it as the books drive on.

One other aspect I want to touch on, is Meghan seems to give her heart rather freely – now I know the situation they were in, but still – I am wondering if we are going to get anymore back story there, I have a feeling there is one...Though I really want answers to so many unanswered questions...which I can't ask here with out giving to much away.

Bottom Line – I will leave you with this, The Iron King is an intense ride with beautiful details, charming characters and a story that sets the "area" your reading in alive with details! It's sparked a furry in me to get off this computer, download The Iron King onto my eReader and get back to the story, to Meghan, Puck and Ash – and HOPE the story keeps going with it's amazingness! I give The Iron King a 4 mushrooms, and am now off to read The Iron Daughter!

  3. Haha, I dont 'do' faeries either! but it's because Wicked Lovely kinda ruined it for me, but I won't lie, i'm tempted to read this one because of all the great things said about it. And I want to be able to be Team Puck/Ash, because we all love teams, don't we? xp

    great review!

  6. Audrey honestly I am not on a team yet...and now having started The Iron Daughter, I am even LESS on a team - but then again I have a feeling maybe I will pick one by the end.

It is a good fairy story, for someone who does not LIKE fairies! :)

  10. Rowena, I feel like there's one "right" answer - sorta like I did with Twilight, she loves one, the other she loves in a different way, as a brother, friend and someone she can always turn to. One, is right, sweet, kind and loving - the other dark, sometimes mean and uncaring but loves her with a passion the other can not...

My choice is Ash, it always has been really, though it makes me a bit sad because I know that Puck would be so much better for her and almost offer her more...her heart is where it is, we cant change who we love...
