Synopsis via goodreads:
Lani and Erin are bonded for life. One thing that connects them is their fascination of fate. Lani wonders how much of our lives has already been decided and how much we can actually influence. Since the Unknown can unexpectedly change our lives forever, how much can we really control?I actually picked up Something Like Fate, kinda late in the day; I figured I would at least make a dent before I was tired enough for sleep, but then I had no idea how pulled into the story I would be come, how wrapped up in the characters I would be, and how very much I would want to find out what happened next. As I felt myself being drawn into the world that is rot with tension, pain and secrets, I just could not stop reading. It was 5:30 AM when I could finally put it down, and only then because I was done.
From the minute Lani meets Jason, she can't deny the intense connection they share. It feels like she's known him forever. She's not sure if he feels it, too. But it doesn't matter. Because Jason is Erin's boyfriend. Lani is determined to ignore her feelings for Jason, no matter how powerful they are, rather than risk hurting her best friend.
How long can Lani keep running from the boy who might be her destiny
First off, I have to mention – I am a Taurus, I have my horoscope sent to my cell phone every morning at 9 AM...I love that kind of thing actually, everything from fate, to the pull of the unknown, to things that are more “concrete” like the stars and horoscopes, I love it all! (I just finished reading a book on Meditation, that was amazing!) Lani, is just like me a Taurus, a Bull – sensitive, lover of nature, passionate, and very stubborn!
She and Erin are bonded, Lani feels that in no uncertain terms, Erin saved her life; fate brought them to that day, and fate allowed Erin to have the clear head, allowed her to make decisions that ultimately saved them all. But that was years ago, and Lani, though still close with Erin feels as though her best friend is slipping away, the friendship they once had, seems to be slipping ever so slightly...each of them is becoming a different person, with new friends and interests – however they are both determined to remain friends, at all costs.
That is until Lani makes the fatal best friend mistake...she falls for Erin's boyfriend...it's not all her fault, Lani reasons – after all, she tells herself, I am only hanging out with Jason, because of Erin, she wants me to get to know him better, and get the scoop on what he's thinking about there relationship.
But with all the classes together, meeting in the hallways and eating lunch together, Lani's hooked, she knows it's wrong, and she could NEVER hurt her best friend that way, but when Jason voices his own feelings – it seems like fate is pushing them together, maybe it's destiny?
No, Lani is sure, it can't be destiny, destiny is not that cruel, right? Lani decides to play it cool, she CAN'T and WILL NOT go after this boy whom she can't stop thinking about, no matter what!
But then, Erin has to leave for the summer...Jason breaks up with her...and Lani can't stop thinking about him...what happens is explosive, can there friendship last though this? Is love enough to concur all?
Like I said earlier, I read this one rather quickly, I just could not get enough...maybe it had something to do with the characters, they are fun loving and enjoyable; though I do have to say I became quiet annoyed with the dialogue! My favorite actually was one of the “non main characters” Blake, we don't see a ton of him but he's got a great sense of humor! Another thing that might have lead to my love of Something Like Fate, was the new-aginess (is that even a word) of it, like I said before I love all that kind of thing! Another thing that might have lead to my love, was the way the story is told...right from the very first chapter I was drawn in...With a line like, “I never meant for it to happen like this. But if I had the chance, there's no way I would take it all back.” How can you not be drawn into it?
Bottom Line – Susane Colasanti is a novelist I have not had the pleasure of reading before, but whom now I will take great care to seek out, she has something to share with the world, a voice, beautiful, eloquent and real. I can not wait to read more, and as for my finial thoughts on this one, I am not sure that “stealing” your best friends boyfriend is right, but then again, I AM sure that finding love, IS worth a walk though hell to find...and so, I related to Lani, and I loved her for her willingness to walk though her own personal hell to find the love that, I think everyone in this world deserves! I give Something Like Fate 4 mushrooms, and put out a plea to Susane to never stop writing!
