Synopsis via goodreads:Majix, is a short, engaging, lighthearted read; that captures your attention and sets you laughing, while rooting for the main character Kestrel.
Kestrel (don't call her Susan) Murphy is angry. Forced to leave her posh San Francisco Bay Area home by her father's illness, she's living in Jurupa (sounds like vomiting), Southern California. It's too hot. The people are stupid. And you have to chew the air to get the oxygen out of it. On the plus side, Kestrel is a witch. Well, a witch-in-training. And she's going acquire the magic she needs to get her life back to normal. At first, she barely notices the people around her-Aunt Ariel, who's taken her in and is herself a well-known white witch; Jose Iturrigaray, the quiet, talented young artist; Blake Cump, troublemaker extraordinaire; Laura Greenwood, who wants to be Kestrel's friend. But life has its own magic, and gradually Kestrel finds that much of one's success as a witch lies in being open to it.
When I first opened up Majix I was not sure what exactly to expect, I mean it says “Notes from a Serious Teen Witch” in the title – seriously notes? I thought. Then once I started, it's written like one might write a diary, or maybe more like a grimoire, especially if your a witch!
I mostly loved this, I have always loved “diary” type books, and this one fit that bill quite nicely, however at times it felt a bit like Kestrel was more telling than doing, which is normal for a diary, but sometimes it felt forced.
Though the writing at times felt forced, mostly in the conversations, it's worth the read, especially for the strong protagonist! Kestrel, is quick witted, funny, strong and brave. Her story is one of coming of age, mixed with a bit magic, and a little love to boot – how can that ever be bad?
Bottom Line – If your looking for a action packed, bare bones, thriller – Majix is not the book your looking for but if your in the mood for, funny, light, and entertaining this IS the book you should pick up! With it's sweet story line, top notch main character and an ending that's “cake” Majix receives 4 mushrooms, I can't wait to read more from Douglas Rees!

ReplyDeleteI was interested in reading this book but alot of reviews say it's written more like Middle Grade then YA so that kind of turned me off. I like what you said though, what to expect and not expect from the type of book it is. That's important to me. I hate going into a book thinking it's light hearted and happy, and then there's murders. I like to know what I am getting into beforehand. Anyway, great review and this sounds like a cute book!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like the perfect read for a preteen this summer. (:
