Synopsis via goodreads:I, on one hand, really enjoyed Siren – like I have already said it's totally original, with it's twists, turns, mountainous peaks and jaw dropping valley's; as well as being extremely fast paced with likeable characters. It's got everything a great mystery needs, the build up is like that of a volcano ready to explode....
Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Sands is afraid of everything—the dark, heights, the ocean—but her fearless older sister, Justine, has always been there to coach her through every challenge. That is, until Justine goes cliff-diving one night near the family’s vacation house in Maine, and her lifeless body washes up on shore the next day.
Though her parents hope that they’ll be able to find closure back in Boston, Vanessa can’t help feeling that her sister’s death wasn’t an accident. After discovering that Justine was keeping a lot of secrets, Vanessa returns to Winter Harbor, hoping that Justine’s boyfriend might know more. But Caleb has been missing since Justine’s death.
Soon, it’s not just Vanessa who’s afraid. All of Winter Harbor is abuzz with anxiety when another body washes ashore, and panic sets in when the small town becomes host to a string of fatal, water-related accidents in which all the victims are found, horrifically, grinning from ear to ear.
Vanessa turns to Caleb’s brother, Simon, for help, and begins to find herself drawn to him. As the pair try to understand the sudden rash of creepy drownings, Vanessa uncovers a secret that threatens her new romance—and will change her life forever.
A seductive paranormal romance full of unexpected twists, Siren is certain to make a big summer splash.
And then, it lies there, kinda flat, with the only thing coming out of the top is a tiny bit of smoke, and not much else...
What happened to the drama? Where did the especially original plot go, I thought, it nose-dived down the cliff with Vanessa. Which, left me quite bummed!
Were the questions first posed answered, yes – we find out what happened to Vanessa's sister, we even find out what's going on with Vanessa herself, as well as the small town in Maine, but on the other hand, there's 10,000 questions that I have that, had no answer, no closure, I felt almost tricked, by Siren. I mean it's got it all, everything, EVERYTHING going for it, to make it unique, interesting, intriguing, original...and then, it just leaves us hanging...with Vanessa lying again, making excuses, and hurting those she loves most...
Bottom Line – I wanted to love it, and mostly I did, but after having read it, I feel let down, sad that I have no idea what happens now, can Vanessa ever find the happiness she's been looking for, can she ever overcome the fears of her past as well as her present and live? I wish I knew because I felt so connected to her, I wanted that for her, beyond anything else in this world it seems like.
I am disappointed not in the plot, the writing, or the originality of the story, I am more disappointed I think because, I did not get the ending I wanted, the closure I felt that Vanessa needed, now I can only HOPE that soon Tricia Rayburn publishes another book, in this series, so we might find out! I give Siren 3 Mushrooms, because I am an emotional reviewer and this book's ending left me wanting and needing so much more!

Great review. Let us know if you hear of a sequel. It might read better to treat book one and two as one story (if she writes another).

ReplyDeleteOf all the mermaid titles being released this year, this is the one I've been looking forward to most. I'm usually not too bad with open-ended conclusions. Nice to hear that there will be two more books in the series, too. Great review!
