I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore - Review

Emotions rain down on me, like hail in a major storm...I look up, hoping to see the sun though the clouds, but it's missing, it's almost like someone swept it way, took if from its rightful spot, but where, where could it be, I wonder?

Wonder, that's exactly what, I Am Number Four, left me with – a distinct wonder, an awe of the English language, the genius behind the story, the capacity in which one Pittacus Lore aka James Frey, draws you into the pulse pounding action.
Synopsis via goodreads:
Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.

Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.

I am Number Four.

I am next.
I Am Number Four, is honestly a diamond in the rough, it's not a story I might have picked up, if not for the movie coming out, I am ashamed to say. However, as a HUGE lover of all things Sci-Fi, I was captivated by the plot that never seemed to let up! Right from the very first few lines, the words started jumping out at me, flying past me like Frisbee's hell bent on connecting, and connect they did.

I would call I Am Number Four a novel told in a “stream of consciousness” fashion, each thought that Number Four (John) thought, I heard, I was able to dive so deeply into his brain, I think I almost saw ear wax. Because of that, I got to know the intimate details of exactly what makes him, him. His desire to stop running, even though he knows he's being hunted; the beautiful love that he has for Sarah; his intense need to have a friend, someone he can trust, count on and talk to; his devotion to Henri, that will always remain beautiful; and his need to start uncovering the secrets which are held not only with in his own body but also his mind as well.

I think with this type of writing you either love it, or find it irritating, I rather enjoyed it, but I can see where others might find it annoying.

The compelling action of I Am Number Four, revolves around John, though the expansiveness of the plot incorporates, so much more than just him, as he starts to discover the secrets he holds inside his body as well as his mind, we too get to know more about the world he is from, begin to see the beauty of not only the planet, but also the people; begin to understand at the very core why it is that Lorien is a place to always be protected.

There was one thing that really bugged me about I Am Number Four, and it's tough to explain with out giving away to much...but sufficed to say, things fell into place and some things were believed a little to effortlessly for my taste, where's the denial, where's the questions? I can't say more, but - if you've read it, I think you might understand...if you have not, it did not pull me out of the story enough to really make a big difference in my opinion!

Bottom Line – I Am Number Four is already in production, with the movie scheduled for February of next year, I am HIGHLY interested to see where they take this extremely original plot...not to mention the actors are amazing, I am excited! Though I do love it as a book, and that usually spells trouble for the movie version!

Sci-Fi at it's best, Pittacus Lore, writes with an alluring manner, in which he interwove a satisfying story which holds within it, pulse pounding action and enduring love, while keeping many of the the mystery's alive and well for the next book in the series. I give I Am Number Four, 4 mushrooms – I can't wait for the movie, and then the next book which is set to release sometime in 2011, where I hope we learn, if he can ever make it back....

Buy, Borrow or Steal? It's out now, so if you love Sci-Fi this is one I would want to own especially!

  9. I need to read this before the movie comes out but I may not have ended up picking it up either if it weren't for the film adaptation. It doesn't really sound like something I would pick up but I'm pretty sure I'd still like it.
