As a book blogger, there's nothing I can say that these amazing ladies did not say better....
As a rape survivor, there's a hollow feeling inside my chest at the very thought that a book like Twenty Boy Summer would be pulled off the shelves...I have yet to read Speak, but I own it, and will be reading it ASAP!
As a woman who has always suffered with depression, I feel as though Mr. Scroggins is trying to take away my right to feel connected to those who have suffered, in much the same way I have.
As a woman who has experienced having charcoal being used on her to prevent her death, and who has used coping mechanisms like cutting to just make it though the day, I feel an intense urge to spit on men like Mr. Scroggins - his thoughts are beyond disgusting, his arguments beyond reproach, I can't even find it with in me to link to him!
As I said before, I can't say it better...than the ladies in the links below - so please if you have not already, take the time and #SPEAKLOUDLY, for those of us that still don't feel like we have a voice!

That guy is crazy, seriousley! Have you seen the clip about Speak? I have not read the book, but now I am so going to buy it!
ReplyDeleteI also share your same story...and I will SPEAK against this.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Jen!
ReplyDeleteAs a writer whose book and offers to speak to students has been rejected by high school librarians because the book has "Christian themes" and they are afraid it will cause controversy, I hate any and all forms of banning. Every book of every genre has the possibility of offending someone. In my humble opinion, there are many people walking around this earth just looking for something to be offended about.
People stepping up on either side of this debate need to be prepared to back up their stance 100%. If you're against book banning - then you should be against ALL book banning - not just some. And if you are for banning books that you find objectionable, then you better be okay with it when your chosen books get banned.
I'm glad to see that this subject is being discussed in an open forum. Maybe it will open some people's eyes.
Thanks for talking about it and sharing your experiences!
This was a wonderful and brave post. Thank you being brave enough to share your story and SPEAK Loudly! This guy won't last long--his opinions are too off the wall.
ReplyDeleteOh, honey, I'm so, so sorry you had to go through that! **Hugs!!!!!** I'm so proud of you though. That couldn't have been an easy post to write, yet you did it anyways! Great job! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing yourself in this touching and powerful post! Life can not be censored! Why should books? I often wonder if the people who cry out for censorship have lived a cushy, quiet life, in which nothing happened to them at all. Otherwise how could they demand for media to be about nothing besides bunnies and kittens?!
